Edith Stein was always a deep thinker. From a young age, she wrestled with questions about God, truth, and the meaning of life. As a teenager, she left the Jewish faith she was raised in and studied philosophy, ultimately becoming a star student of one of the greatest German thinkers of the time, Edmund Husserl. Edith was brilliant. But she still felt empty, like something was missing. It wasn't until she stumbled upon a copy of the autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila and read it cover to cover that she glimpsed the truth she was looking for in the Catholic Church. Thus began an incredible journey of faith. In the two decades following her Baptism, Edith became a leader in the Catholic Women's Movement, taught in a Dominican school, translated some of the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas, and took vows as a Carmelite nun. After her arrest by the Nazis in 1942, she spent her final days bringing the love and hope of Christ to her fellow prisoners in Auschwitz. Meet Saint Edith Stein (1891-1942), also known as Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, and get to know a woman who radiated the mind and heart of Christ in a dark and troubled world through her intelligence, courage, and love.
