On July 16, 1251, Our Lady gave the scapular to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite Prior. She promised that those who wore this scapular in her honour and lived well their vocation in life would be saved.
Our Lady told St. Simon: "I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death, and whomsoever I shall find in purgatory, I shall free so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting."
Our Lady's Scapular promise is for all who are formally enrolled in the Brown Scapular Confraternity (any priest can perform this enrollment), wear the Brown Scapular continuously, practice the virtue of chastity according to one's state in life, and recite daily the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin or (with a priest's dispensation) the Holy Rosary.
According to the testimony of Sr. Lúcia of Fátima, "Our Lady wants all to wear the brown scapular. The scapular and the Rosary are inseparable."
